The legend revolves around the trials and tribulations faced by Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, who is Lord Jagannath in the context of the Puri temple. It is inspired by Lakshmi Purana a poetic rendition in Odia language by Balaram Das written in the fifteenth century.
