Gopinath Mohanty, an iconic Odia writer of the twentieth century, blazed a new trail in Odia literature. A deep love for nature, a keen insight into the everyday life of the common man, empathy for the marginalized were the hallmarks of Mohanty’s writings. The Flowing Stream is an English translation of the first volume of his autobiography, Srotaswati, which talks about his childhood years, the recollection of which finds its way into his magnum opus, Mati Matala. The narrative is an inspiring tale of the resilience of a young boy growing up in abject poverty, a boy who, very early in life, was fired with the desire to enrich Odia literature. ‘Poverty brings misery and hardship, but more than anything else, it fills one with a sense of triumph when it is successfully vanquished ’ says the autobiography. He did indeed vanquish poverty to create literature, because for him, ‘a language gain[ed] eminence by the richness of its literature’.
