Description

Chokher Bali, a remarkable novel, was written in 1903 by the famous Indian writer Rabindranath Tagore. Chokher Bali revolves around the central character, Binodini, and her relationships with three individuals. It explores the extramarital affair between her, a young widow, and Mahindra, an old suitor of hers, the complicated friendship with Asha, Mahindra’s wife, and her mutually conflicting feelings with Bihari, Mahindra’s childhood and best friend. The novel also highlights issues of female literacy, child marriage, patriarchy within the family, and the fate of widows during that era. They named their friendship “Chokher Bali” (literally sand in eye—a common idiom in Bengali that means ‘enemy’). This actually foreshadows the unpleasant turn of their innocent friendship. Sometimes, Binodini would sigh looking at the young couple.
